Resumen de Heladas en fruticultura: una mirada desde Chile

  Heladas polares en primavera han causado cuantiosos daños en huertos frutales de la zona central de Chile en los últimos años. La correcta dimensión de estos eventos permite enfrentarlos certeramente. Las heladas afectarán en diferente medida, de acuerdo a su origen, magnitud y duración, así como al estado fenológico del frutal. Mayor daño será en floración o cuaja de frutos. Medidas sencillas de manejo de huerto reducen su impacto. Sin embargo, al considerar un sistema de control activo, tener la mayor cantidad de antecedentes de las diferentes alternativas, modo de acción, efectividad y eficiencia, permitirá decidir el más adecuado. Puesto que un control activo de heladas polares involucra una importante transferencia energética al huerto, la elección compromete la evaluación de diversos factores, técnicos y económicos. En las condiciones chilenas, el sistema integrado de movimiento de aire más calefacción parece ser el más promisorio, en especies de altos retornos, como cerezos.

  Freezes in fruit growing. A look from Chile. Polar freezes in spring time caused considerable damage at fruit orchards of central Chile last years. Right dimension of these events allows growers to face them in an accurate way. Freeze will cause different effect, according to their nature, magnitude and duration, as well as the phenological state of the fruit tree affected. Greater damage will be in flowering or fruit set. Simple cultural practices can reduce their impact. However, when a freeze protection method is considered, having the most background about different alternatives, action mode, effectiveness and efficiency, will allow to growers to decide the most appropriate for each case. Since an active protection for polar freeze involves a significant energy transfer to the orchard, the right choice comprises the evaluation of technical and economic factors. For Chilean conditions, integrated protection system with air movement plus heating seems to be the most promising in species of high returns, such as sweet cherry.
