    En la Primera Guerra Carlista, el bando legitimista, en su desigual lucha contra el Estado isabelino, se vio lastrado por la falta de recursos. Una de las alternativas para paliar este problema fue la compra de armas en el exterior. La malograda misión de la balandra británica Express Packet —objeto de estudio de este trabajo—, constituye un incidente de indudable interés por varias razones. Por una parte, nos ofrece una visión de los entresijos del tráfico de armas al que hubo de recurrir el carlismo en el marco de la convulsa situación que vivía Portugal —país con una guerra similar a la que se desarrollaba en España y donde don Carlos María Isidro residía en un forzado retiro—. Por otra, desvela las intenciones del carlismo para, desde el norte de Portugal, lograr un alzamiento guerrillero de envergadura en Galicia que facilitase la entrada en España del titular de la dinastía carlista.

    Con documentos procedentes, entre otras instituciones, de la Capitanía General de Galicia, este trabajo pretende dar a conocer información inédita y ahondar en los detalles que rodearon el apresamiento de la Express Packet y en las esperanzas carlistas depositadas en esta operación.

    In the First Carlist War, the legitimist side was hampered by its lack of resources in its unequal struggle against the Isabelline state. One of the options to make good this shortage was to purchase arms from abroad. The failed operation of the British sloop Express Packet —the subject of this research—, is of unquestionable interest for several reasons. On the one hand, it gives us an insight into the intricacies of the arms trafficking to which Carlism had to resort in the context of the turbulent situation in Portugal, a country in the throes of a similar war to Spain, and where Don Carlos was residing in forced retirement. On the other hand, it reveals Carlist intentions to instigate a major guerrilla uprising in Galicia, from their position in Northern Portugal, facilitating the entry into Spain of the head of the Carlist dynasty.

    Using documents from the General Captaincy of Galicia and other institutions, this paper seeks to incorporate unpublished information and to probe into the details that led to the capture of the Express Packet and explore what Carlists hoped to achieve from this operation.
