  El Galeón de Manila que unía ambas orillas del Pacífico debe ser estudiado desde una perspectiva más amplia que la meramente económica. Entre los siglos XVI y XVII esta conexión entre América y Asia además de reportar grandes beneficios a las coronas hispana y portuguesa, creó todo un circuito cultural en torno a los navíos, que incrementó la gama de objetos exclusivos y de lujo que reclamaban las élites españolas y novohispanas. De igual manera, como se analizará en las siguientes páginas, condicionó la cultura material de las misiones en las Indias orientales.

  The Manila Galleon that joined both shores of the Pacific must be studied from a broader perspective than merely economic. In the 16th and 17th centuries this connection between America and Asia reported great benefits to the Spanish and Portuguese crowns, and created a whole cultural circuit around the ships that increased the range of exclusive and luxury objects demanded by the Spaniards and New-Spaniard elites. Likewise, as will be discussed in the following pages, it conditioned the material culture of the missions in the East Indies.
