The article reports on research by two groups, one led by Tom Fennell and one led by Jonathan Morris, that have provided experimental evidence of monopoles, which are magnets without opposing electrical charges. The unbound components exist in spin ices in which their poles are not electron-like particles. An overview of the materials the teams experimented with, such as holmium titanate and dysprosium titanate, and an explanation of spin ice is presented.
