  • The article discusses the origin of cupcakes which is thought by some food historians to be an American culinary invention. According to food historian Andrew Smith, the first known cupcake recipe appeared in a 1826 American cookbook. Topics include an overview of the Web site that keeps track of recipes, called Food Timeline, which is maintained by culinary historian Andrea Broomfield, why Broomfield thinks the earliest recipe came from England, and the popularity of the cupcake in the U.S.
