    The aim of this paperis to examine the spatiality of The Beast in the Jungle, published by Henry James in 1903. This existential novella represents John’s lethargic wait for a rare and prodigious event in his life. A specific objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between spatial construction and the subjectivity of the charactersdrawing on the theoretical framework of Borges Filho (2007) and Brandão (2013), as well as on the criticism of Bazargan (2008) and Simonds (2018). The method relies on analyzing the physical spaces, which aim to represent the materiality that surrounds the characters, and the metaphorical spaces, which impel this physical dimension to abstraction, to mental elaboration.The results indicate that physical and metaphorical spaces are constructed so as not only to locate the characters, but to express their personalities, reiterate the message of the novella, reverberate human experiences, and problematize the awareness of John Marcher.

    O objetivo deste artigo é estudar a espacialidade da novela The beast in the jungle, publicada por Henry James em 1903. Traduzida como A fera na selva, essa obra de natureza existencial representa a espera letárgica de John Marcher por um acontecimento raro e prodigioso em sua vida. Pretendemos investigar, especificamente, a relação entre a construção espacial e a subjetividade dos personagens, com basenas considerações teóricas de Borges Filho (2007) e Brandão (2013), bem como nas leituras críticas de Bazargan (2008) e Simonds (2018). A metodologia se pauta na análise, de um lado, dos espaços físicos, que visam representar a materialidade que circunda os personagens, e, de outro, dos espaços metafóricos, que impelem essa dimensão física ao abstrato, à elaboração mental. Como resultado, observa-se que os espaços físicos e metafóricos são construídos de modo a não somente localizar os personagens, mas a expressar suas personalidades, reiterar a mensagem da novela, reverberar as experiências humanas e problematizar a conscientização de John Marcher.
