  • The article discusses about monochrome and 20th-century avant-garde art. A recent exhibition in Madrid, Spain offered a history of single-color painting and sculpture, installed as what curator Barbara Rose termed a "perceptual experiment." In a way rare among today's museum shows, the survey overwhelmed viewers by the sheer visual and tactile experience on view. The monochrome has played a role in Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Color Field painting, Arte Povera and any number of other schools and styles.
