Recent critical anthropology has sought to uncover the mechanisms by which the discipline constructs or invents its places and subjects. The role of photography in shaping a particular vision of a particular individual or group is also governed by these mechanisms. Starting from the critique of this use of photography, the authors subject the photographs of Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain to the same scrutiny to reveal ways in which they marginalise the very subjects on which they depend.
