Varig, which has long been the main Brazilian airline, went bankrupt in 2010. This article retraces its history to help understand the reasons for its rise, the creation and gradual extension of a regional, national and international network drawing the geopolitical map of the countries with which Brazil has the most relations. Finally, it analyses its sharp fall, following a series of bad decisions and lack of adaptation to the new conditions of the air market in the 2000s.

La Varig, qui a longtemps été la principale compagnie aérienne brésilienne, a fait faillite en 2010. L’article retrace son histoire pour aider à comprendre les raisons de son ascension, la création, l’extension progressive d’un réseau régional, national et international dessinant la carte géopolitique du monde et mettant en relief les pays avec lesquels le Brésil entretient le plus de relations. Il analyse enfin sa chute brutale, à la suite d’une série de mauvaises décisions et faute d’adaptation aux nouvelles conditions du marché aérien dans les années 2000.
