The present study proposes a reflection on the relations of power and hierarchy from familiar practices in Porto Alegre during the late colonial period in the second half of the 18th century. The laboratory of our analysis will be the family relations of Dona Anna Marques de Sampaio, a celibate without children and Manuel José de Freitas Travassos, important "good man" who lived in this community during this period. For this, we will use the theoretical and methodological contributions of the History of the Family and Populations, historical Demography and the nominative cross of civil and ecclesiastical sources with the purpose of understanding these traits refer to the Old Regime in the far south of Portuguese America. In general, we consider that social and geographical mobility were the pillars that combined a series of characteristics that we can call as practices of Old Regime southern.
