    This article intends to analyze the policy adopted by Aruã indigenous groups during the 17th century. It was a "nation" that inhabited the Island of Joanes (Marajó), the Cabo Norte (Amapá) and surroundings areas and interacted with diverse individuals and/or groups – Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, blacks, mestizos, others Indians. From the specific bibliography and the use of diversified primary sources (chroniclers, legislation, correspondence exchanged between different authoritiesando thers), we will prioritize the answers of the aruans to the indigenist policies adopted by the Portuguese crown in that part of the Amazon. Our hypothesis states that the policy adopted by these Indians was closely related to the imperial policies adopted by the European states who was operating in the region.

    O presente artigo pretende analisar a política adotada por grupos indígenas aruãs durante o século XVII. Tratava-se de uma “nação” que habitava a Ilha de Joanes (Marajó), o Cabo Norte (Amapá) e arredores e interagia com os mais diversos indivíduos e/ou grupos – portugueses, ingleses, holandeses, franceses, negros, mestiços, outros indígenas. A partir da bibliografia respectiva e do uso de fontes primárias diversificadas, priorizaremos as respostas dos aruãs às políticas indigenistas adotadas pela coroa portuguesa naquele rincão da Amazônia. Nossa hipótese afirma que a política seguida por esses índios possuía íntima relação com as políticas imperiais adotadas pelas potências europeias que atuavam na região.
