  The book Theological Medecine is usually known for the polemic caused by its publication in Lisbon at the end of 1794. Its anonymous author accused the priests of treating as sinners individuals afflicted by diseases that had their origin in the body and which therefore should be treated by Medicine . It was not long before the book was banned by royal censorship and its copies seized. In a general, the episode is usually presented as a symptom of the climate of ideological effervescence and contestation of the order that marked Portugal in the last years of the XVIIIth century. Although it does not contradict this interpretation, the article suggests that the critique of confessional activity in Theological Medecine is inscribed in the claim of illuminist philosophical currents for the reformulation of the relations between medical knowledge and society. Partly motivated by concerns with the physical and moral decadence of populations.   A obra Medicina Theologica ficou conhecida pela polêmica causada pela sua publicação em Lisboa no final de 1794. De autoria anônima, o texto acusava os confessores de tratar como pecadores indivíduos acometidos por enfermidades que seriam do corpo, e que, portanto, deveriam ser tratadas pela medicina. Não tardou para que a obra fosse proibida pela censura régia e seus exemplares apreendidos. De maneira geral, o episódio costuma ser apresentado como um sintoma do clima de efervescência ideológica e de contestação da ordem que marcou Portugal dos últimos anos do setecentos. Embora o artigo não contrarie esta interpretação, ele procura mostrar que a crítica à atividade confessional na Medicina Theologica se inscreve na reivindicação de correntes filosóficas iluministas pela reformulação das relações entre conhecimento médico e sociedade, em parte motivada por preocupações com a decadência física e moral da população europeia.
