On what step of the socio-economic taxonomy of the pre-industrial cities were construction professsionals housed? This analysis of the level of annual income and the assets owned by the masters builders, architects, master stonemasons and masters masons of Burgos in the evolution of the 18th Century. From the contrast and the critical analysis, this paper follows the idiosyncrasy of one of the labor collectives of the urban fabric, especially those who dedicated their socio-professional tasks to build, rebuild or simply repair the private or collective buildings in which the residents of the city were housed in the Old Regime.Construction professionals considered as artisans, both embedded among the “viles” professions, did not enjoy annual income or an excessively high material culture.Nevertheless, especially in their daily exercise, they were far from the most poor and less fortunate, that is,the spinners, the day laborers, the military troops and many of the farmens.
