    The text examines the socioeconomic characteristics of the captaincy of Maranhão province/the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, arguing the structure and dynamics of the slave system in that context. Exploring a literature search, the article has a claim to make a synthesis of these topics. Features, initially, some geographical features in the province, discussing your occupation process and the composition of society in the 800. Analyzes the economy of the late 18th century and throughout the following century, giving emphasis to the apogee of the monocultora industry and the decadent movement that marks the discourse of elites after the collapse of the big crops. About the captivity, investigates the impact on functioning of slavery after the ban of transatlantic traffic, dedicating himself to the study of the distinction between the menial work in the countryside and in the city. Search, finally, criticize forms of resistance of black men and women enslaved in Maranhão 19th century.

    O texto analisa a província do Maranhão no século XIX, examinando suas características socioeconômicas e debatendo a estruturação e a dinâmica do sistema escravista nesse contexto. Apresenta, inicialmente, algumas características geográficas da província, discutindo seu processo de ocupação e a composição da sociedade no Oitocentos. Analisa a economia de fins do século XVIII e ao longo do século seguinte, dando ênfase ao apogeu da indústria monocultora e ao decadentismo que marca o discurso das elites após a derrocada da grande lavoura. Sobre o cativeiro, investiga os impactos no funcionamento do escravismo após a proibição do tráfico transatlântico, dedicando-se ainda ao estudo da distinção entre o trabalho servil no campo e na cidade. Busca, por fim, criticar as formas de resistência de negros e negras escravizados no Maranhão oitocentista.
