El daño al patrimonio cultural en los conflictos armados no es nuevo en la historia, pero sólo recientemente se han desarrollado herramientas jurídicas para combatirlo. Estas herramientas son aún limitadas en su aplicación y efectos, pese a la creciente toma de conciencia de la comunidad internacional sobre la necesidad de defender el patrimonio. En los conflictos híbridos de la era global los ataques contra los bienes culturales han ganado visibilidad, simbolismo y repercusión. Con la presencia del yihadismo en ciertas zonas en conflicto se ha producido un auge del expolio y en particular, de la iconoclasia. La narrativa yihadista utiliza la iconoclasia como arma de “destrucción creativa”; con ella se persigue destruir el pasado para construir sobre sus ruinas una utópica comunidad de los creyentes (umma). La destrucción del patrimonio de aquellos a quienes no se considera parte de la umma constituye una limpieza cultural, que a menudo precede o acompaña a la limpieza étnica. En este tipo de narrativa, no basta con eliminar físicamente a las comunidades consideradas infieles o apóstatas, es preciso además borrar su memoria.

The damage to cultural heritage during armed conflicts is not new in History, but the legal instruments to fight against it have been developed just recently. Those instruments are still limited in their application and effects, notwithstanding the growing international awareness of the necessity of protecting the heritage. In the hybrid conflicts of the global era, the attacks on cultural heritage have grown in visibility, symbolism and impact. The presence of jihadism in certain conflict areas has resulted in an upsurge of looting and plundering, but especially in campaigns of iconoclasm. Jihadist narrative uses iconoclasm as a weapon of “creative destruction”, which tries to destroy the past to build a utopian community of believers (umma) on the ashes. The destruction of the cultural heritage of those who are not perceived as part of the umma is a cultural cleansing and often precedes or accompanies ethnic cleansing. In this kind of narrative, physically eliminating the communities seen as unfaithful or heretic is not enough; the goal is to erase their memory.
