Navegando en la oscuridad. El miedo en el discurso inicial sobre el Río de la Plata

    En este artículo se analizará un texto fundamental para comprender las representaciones inaugurales sobre la región rioplatense: la carta que Luis Ramírez, un expedicionario de la armada de Sebastián Gaboto, escribe a su padre en 1528. Interesa indagar el discurso sobre la experiencia del miedo a la oscuridad, la noche y la tormenta —ligada al desnudo y la muerte— en el relato sobre la navegación. Se propone, por un lado, que ese discurso pone en funcionamiento estrategias retóricas por medio de las cuales Ramírez pretende persuadir a su destinatario, y que, por otro, el temor a la oscuridad propicia el surgimiento de un imaginario particular sobre la región rioplatense.

    In this article we will analyze a fundamental text to understand the inaugural representations about the Río de la Plata region: the letter that Luis Ramírez, an expeditionary of Sebastián Gaboto’s armada, writes to his father in 1528. It is interesting to investigate the discourse on the experience of fear of darkness, night and the storm —linked to nakedness and death— in the narration about navigation.

    It is proposed, on the one hand, that this discourse puts into operation rhetorical strategies through which Ramírez intends to persuade his addressee, and that, on the other hand, the fear of the darkness propitiates the emergence of a particular imaginary about the Río de la Plata region.
