Resumen de Wine in early historic Scotland

Craig Cessford

  • The evidence for wine in early historic Scotland is examined, references in Adomnan's life of Columba, and the Gododdin poem are studied, and various types of imported pottery are discussed. The evidence linking this pottery with wine is analysed and the use of barrels is considered. The archaeological evidence for wine at documented sites is examined as is the role of the Church. An attempt is made to quantify the amount of wine consumed. Wine is shown to have been of considerable socio‐economic importance even if the quantities involved were small.
