The article analyzes the identity of Chinese contemporary art in the 21st century. It revisits the article "Ambivalent Witnesses" by Hou Hanru published in the magazine "Flash Art" in 1996. The identity of Chinese art is examined by exploring the third Guangzhou Triennial. The role of postcolonialist discourse in the development of Chinese art is discussed, as well as the contribution of Chinese art communities to global art and intellectual discourse.
