Los valores en los primeros guías de los Picos de Europa

    Desde!mediados!del!siglo!XIX!hasta!principios!del!XX,! fueron!pocos!los!“turistas”!que!se!adentraron!en!los! Picos! de! Europa,! pero! siempre! lo! hicieron! acompañados!de!“lugareños”,!que!les!ayudaban!con! sus! equipajes,! y! les! guiaban! por! la! intrincada! orografía.! Pero! poco! sabemos! de! éstos! últimos:! quiénes! eran,! a! qué! se! dedicaban,! cómo! realizaban! su! labor,! etc.! Apenas! existe! literatura! dedicada! a! ellos.! Ellos! fueron! los! principales! responsables! de! los! triunfos! y! los! fracasos! de! los! primeros! viajeros.! Si! bien! en! su! gran! mayoría! analfabetos,! no! tuvieron! excesivos!problemas!para!entenderse!con! franceses! e!ingleses!(con!escaso!nivel!de!castellano!en!muchas! ocasiones).! Fueron! honestos! y! trabajadores! (según! los!propios!“turistas”),!pero!también!rudos!y!tercos,! a!la!par que!impuntuales.!Pero!sin!duda,!el!valor!más! apreciado!era! su! tremenda! habilidad! trepadora!y!la! gran!ayuda!que!prestaban,!encontrando!los!caminos! por! los! que! avanzar! y! siempre! dispuestos! a! ayudar! cuando! era! necesario! (con! una!mano! o! incluso! con! todo!el!cuerpo!“haciendo!de!puente!si!así!lo!requería! la!situación).

    En!ésta! revisión! histórica,! gracias! a! los!escritos! que! estos! primeros! viajeros! dejaron,! iremos! descubriendo! lo! que! pensaban! de! sus! acompañantes.!Centrándonos! tanto!en!los!primeros! viajeros! OG.! Schulz,! Casiano! del! Prado,! y! el! conde! SaintOSaud! principalmente)! como! en! los! primeros! deportistas! OPedro! Pidal,! marqués! de! Villaviciosa,! José! Fernández! Zabala! y! otrosO de! este! macizo! montañoso,!fundamentalmente!los!integrantes!de!la! Real!Sociedad!Española!de!Alpinismo!Peñalara.

    Encontramos!grandes! diferencias!en!la! relación! que! los! guías! tenían! con! sus! clientes! a! lo! largo! del! tiempo,! existiendo! una! evolución! y! profesionalización! de! los! guías.! Pasando! de! ser! mediocres! informadores,! pero! muy! buenos! porteadores,! a ser! queridos! y! profesionales! acompañantes.

    From! the! middle! of! the! XIXth! century! to! the! beginning of the XXth! one,! there! were! a! few! “tourists”! who came! into! Picos de! Europa! mountains,! but! they! were! always! with! local! people! working!as!guides.!Those!guides!carried!the!luggage, and! drove! the! tourists inside! the! mountains.! Nowadays!we!only have!small!information!on!them.

    Who!were! they?!Which!was! their! occupation?!How! did! they! carry! out! their! job! as! guides?! There! is not! much!literature!based!on!them.

    They!were! the!main!architects!of! the!successes!and! failures!of the first! travelers.!While mostly!illiterate,! they!had!no!difficulties!to!get!along!with!French!and! English travelers!(with!low!levels!of!Spanish!language! in!many! cases).!They!were! honest!and! hardworking! (as! “tourists” themselves),! but! also! tough! and! stubborn,! just! as tardy.! But! certainly the! most! appreciated! value! was! their great! climbing! ability! and! the!great! help! rendered,! finding!ways! to!go! on! and always!willing!to!help!when!needed!(with!a!hand! or! even! the! whole! body! “being! a! bridge! if! the! situation!required!it”).

    In! this! historical! review,! based! on! articles! wrote! by! the!first!tourists,!we!find what!they!think!about!their! guides.! We! will! pay! attention! to! articles! by! those! first! tourist! (especially!G.!Schulz,!Casiano!del!Prado,! and! SaintOSaud)! and! also! the! first! climbers! (Pedro! Pidal,! José! Fernandez! Zabala! among)! of! Picos! de! Europa.

    We! found! differences! between! first! travelers! and! climbers! relationship! with! their! guides.! These! ones! began! as! good! carriers,! and! became! guides,! almost! friends.
