La georreferencia de mapas históricos coloniales de las Américas que representan extensas áreas rurales ha sido un desafío metodológico para la historiografía que utiliza los sistemas de información geográfica. Este artículo presenta la georreferenciación del mapa de Couto Reis de 1785 para la región de Campos en Río de Janeiro. Así, explica cuál es el problema de georreferenciar este tipo de mapas y expone en detalle el método usado para hacerlo. Además, muestra algunos de los posibles aportes que tiene para la historiografía el trabajo con este tipo de fuentes.
En ese sentido, este texto tiene el doble objetivo, primero, de explicar el método, y segundo, de invitar al uso de los sistemas de información geográfica en la historia.

The georeferencing of colonial historical maps of the Americas representing vast rural areas has been a methodological challenge for historiography that uses Geographic Information Systems.
This paper presents the georeferencing of the Couto Reis Map of 1785 for the Campos Region, in Rio de Janeiro. Thus, it explains the problem of georeferencing this kind of maps and exposes, in detail, the method used to georeference. In addition, it offers some examples of the possible contributions for the historiography that works with this type of sources.
In that sense, this text has the double objective, first, to explain the method, second, to invite the use of Geographic Information Systems in History.
