This article discusses neurophysiological research indicating that the separation of the brain into right and left hemispheres originated before the development of vertebrates 500,000,000 years ago. Research into right handedness, or left brain dominance, in frogs, whales, and baboons is described. The relationship between competing issues requiring attention such as gathering food and avoiding predators and the lateralization of the brain is examined.
