The article discusses the discovery that living Argentine ants release two chemicals which indicate to other ants that they are alive. The behavior of ants with regard to other ants that have died is described, noting that a behavior termed necrophoresis involves the immediate removal of dead ants by their fellow colony members once they cease to detect the presence of the chemicals dolichodial and iridomyrmecin.
