ABSTRACT Sodium bicarbonate supplementation in musculation practicersOne of the main causes of muscular fatigue due to exertion is the increase of the hydrogen concentration in the intracellular environment, acidifying it and, consequently, negatively influencing the performance. The scientific literature says that sodium bicarbonate supplementation is able to attenuate pH unbalance in sports practice, reducing fatigue and improving performances. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on the performance of bodybuilders. All of the participants took supplementation containing 0.3g · kg-1 body weight of sodium bicarbonate and underwent training. Blood lactate and subjective perception exertion were analyzed in two moments: without supplementation and with supplementation. The blood lactate levels increased in all participants, and most of them reported a reduction in the subjective perception exertion. Sodium bicarbonate supplementation was shown to be effective in improving physical performance in the sample evaluated.
