Rays that strike silicate grains or water in the soil can generate free oxygen radicals that also degrade organic molecules, says Alexander Pavlov of NASA'S Goddard Space Plight Center in Greenbelt MD. To see how much damage they do, Pavlov bombarded a mix of amino acids and hydrated silicates with high energy gamma rays in the lab. After a dose equal to about 10 million years of Martian radiation, almost all the amino acids had broken down, he reported at the Astrobiology Science Conference in Chicago.
