White talks about Martin Burke at the University of Illinois, the machine's inventor, encountered the problem while working as a doctor in the late 1990S. He talks of his hospital days when he saw the agony of incurable disease. It was then that Burke recognized the problem was partly down to the lack of drugs pouring out of research labs, so he decided to change tack and become a chemist.
