Introduction Trochanteric hip fractures in the elderly are common and associated with significant mortality in the first year. Materials and methods We performed a hospital observational cohort study of 45 consecutive trochanteric fractures patients over 60 years old, treated with a sliding screw plate (TDT) and 95° condilar blade plate (PAF). Results and conclusions The average age of participants was 79.3 years, 58% were female; the TDT group was oldest and with lowest Hb the determinants of one year mortality were as follows: over 80 years of age, female, lowest Hb [< 12 g hemoglobin], unstable fractures, early (less than 5 days) surgical treatment, more than 90 minutes of average intraoperative time, general anesthesia and utilization of fixed-angle plate.
