Resumen de J. Alfred Prufrock y la transformación del canto: traducir un monólogo dramático

El objetivo del presente trabajo es comparar dos traducciones de “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” de T.S. Eliot: una por el dramaturgo y poeta Rodolfo Usigli y otra por parte del poeta Hernán Bravo Varela. Si bien ambas versiones se realizan en México, su publicación sucede en distintos momentos históricos. Como monólogo dramático y poema inaugural de Eliot, “Prufrock” ayudó a forjar la sensibilidad moderna en la poesía y supone una complejidad particular. La concatenación de diversas influencias, referencias literarias, figuras retóricas y un estilo conversacional integra una voz poética que comporta un reto traductor nada sencillo. Con el género del monólogo dramático como eje, la aproximación del presente trabajo busca resaltar coincidencias y decisiones de traducción en ambas versiones.

The purpose of this paper consists of comparing two translations of T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”: the first one by writer Rodolfo Usigli and the second one by contemporary poet Hernán Bravo Varela. Even though both versions were made in Mexico, they were published during different historic moments. Being a dramatic monologue and Eliot’s first published poem, “Prufrock” helped in the process of creating poetry’s modern sensibility and states a very particular complexity. The mixing of influences, literary references, rhetoric figures and conversational style, makes up a complex poetic voice that represents a challenge for translators. With dramatic monologue as the axis of analysis, the approach of this paper is to highlight coincidences and translation decisions in both versions.
