    La localidad gaditana de Vejer de la Frontera, por su cercanía a las distintas líneas fronterizas a lo largo de la Edad Media, es un caso clave para el estudio de las creencias cristianas en la zona. Debido a los peligros que su-ponía vivir en esta hostilidad, los vejeriegos acentuaron su fe hasta altos extre-mos, teniéndola como motor de lucha ante el reino musulmán. Prueba de ello es la proliferación de distintos lugares de culto a lo largo de su término, con la finalidad de buscar la protección celestial y llevar a cabo una vida religiosa plena. Entre estas edificaciones destaca la erección de ermitas, que llegan a ser un total de quince en el siglo XVI, siendo algunas de gran antigüedad. De todas ellas se realiza un breve estudio sobre su origen y aspectos más significativos en la época, gracias a la alusión que se hace de las mismas en las fuentes tes-tamentarias de este siglo.

    The Cadiz town of Vejer de la Frontera, due to its proximity to the different border lines throughout the Middle Ages, is a key case for the study of Christian beliefs in the area. Due to the dangers of living in this hostility, the vejeriegos accentuated their faith to high extremes, having it as an engine of struggle against the Muslim kingdom. Proof of this is the proliferation of different places of worship throughout its term, with the purpose of seeking heavenly protection and carrying out a full religious life. Among these con-structions stands out the erection of hermitages, that get to be a total of fifteen in century XVI, being some of great antiquity.
