    Los moriscos ¿eran españoles y buenos cristianos, como muchos de ellos consistentemente afirmaban? O ¿eran criptomusulmanes, como afirmaba el estado, con igual persistencia? ¿Dónde estaba su identidad o, más bien, con quiénes se identificaban: con los cristianos entre quienes vivían o con los musulmanes que habitaban al otro lado del Mediterráneo? La cuestión de la identidad y de la percepción identitaria es clave en todo esto.

    Were the Moriscos Spanish and good Christians, as many of them consistently stated, or were they crypto-Muslims, as the state, with equal determination, insisted? Where was their identity, or rather, with whom they identify: with the Christians among whom they lived or with the Muslims who lived on the other side of the Mediterranean? The question of identity and how identity is perceived is key in all of this.
