La alargada sombra del Retiro, 1857-1939 ocho décadas de desarrollo urbano del Ensanche Este de Madrid

    Objetivo La zona de Madrid al Este del Retiro, quizá por su tardío desarrollo, no ha suscitado el interés de historiadores ni urbanistas. El objetivo es analizar la forma urbana en este ámbito en sus primeras ocho décadas de desarrollo, indagando en las consecuencias que tuvo la interposición del Real Sitio como factor distintivo respecto de otros barrios.

    Metodología Se lleva a cabo un análisis comparativo de la forma urbana mediante la reconstitución gráfica del anteproyecto del Ensanche y del estado de la ciudad en tres momentos significativos de su desarrollo. Esta reconstitución se ha trazado tomando como base cartográfica el actual plano parcelario de la ciudad.

    Conclusiones La posición detrás del Retiro de la zona urbana estudiada ha condicionado el tardío comienzo de su proceso urbanizador, su planificación, su trazado y sus usos.

    El anteproyecto del Ensanche inició el proceso urbanizador y es el germen de la ciudad como propuesta inicial. Durante las siguientes ocho décadas de construcción de la ciudad el proyecto original sufrió diversas transformaciones producto principalmente de la improvisación.

    La arquitectura de la Beneficencia fue el motor del lento crecimiento de la ciudad en la zona.

    Junto con la arquitectura industrial, las instalaciones deportivas y recreativas y la vivienda aristocrática, conformó un paisaje urbano diverso hoy día desaparecido.

    Originalidad Este artículo deriva de una tesis doctoral inédita. Las principales líneas de investigación son la forma urbana y el empleo del dibujo como instrumento de investigación y entronca con otras investigaciones recientes referidas a la ciudad de Madrid.

    Objective The area of Madrid to the east of the Retiro Park, perhaps due to its late development, has not provoked the interest of historians or urban planners. The objective is to analyze the urban form in this area in its first eight decades of development, studying the consequences of the position of the Royal Property between this neighborhood and the city center as a distinctive factor with respect to other neighborhoods.

    Methodology The area of Madrid to the east of the Retiro Park, perhaps due to its late development, has not provoked the interest of historians or urban planners. The objective is to analyze the urban form in this area in its first eight decades of development, studying the consequences of the position of the Royal Property between this neighborhood and the city center as a distinctive factor with respect to other neighborhoods.

    Conclusions The position of the studied neighborhood behind the Retiro Park has conditioned the late start of its urbanization process, its planning, its layout and its uses.

    The first draft of the city expansion started the urbanization process and is the germ of its layout. During the following eight decades of construction of the city the original design underwent several transformations, mainly due to improvisation.

    The Charity architecture was the driving force of the slow growth of the city in this area. In conjunction with industrial architecture, sports and recreational facilities, and aristocratic housing, shaped a diverse urban landscape that has now disappeared.

    Originality This article is derived from an unpublished doctoral thesis. The main lines of research are the urban form and the use of drawing as a research instrument and connects with other recent researches related to the city of Madrid.
