  • The article focuses on trauma care research with specific reference to communication with patients who lack consciousness. It discusses imaging techniques that determine which patients retain some awareness or might regain consciousness. Functional magnetic resonance imaging has found that a portion of patients who are labeled "vegetative" are conscious. It discusses the use of electrocardiographic technology to detect consciousness.
