  • The article discusses rivalries between the teams of scientists developing the telescope projects the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), and the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). According to the author, the three projects have been competing for funding, causing delays in important research. Details on historical rivalries over telescope research, including the debates between philanthropists Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller over the funding of a telescope at Caltech, are presented.
