  • The article reports on the approval of technology which can eliminate most infectious agents from platelets and blood plasma. It states the INTERCEPT Blood System, developed by biomedical products company Cerus, was approved by December 2014 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It mentions the technology uses ultraviolet radiation to bind to nucleic acids in RNA or DNA found in bacteria and viruses and prevents pathogens from reproducing in the body.
