Demjanenko presents a problem scenario that challenges students to predict the number of snow days using a Native American method that is based on beans in a jar. The Bean Counting, Fog, and Snow problem uses a Native American method of forecasting the weather to explore conceptual understanding of estimation and counting and cardinality of using concrete models. Here, she encourages students to collaborate and write down their thinking in a visual representation as they worked toward solving the problem.
