Some 500 years ago they were hunted out of Britain for their fur and meat. Now beavers are making a comeback--at least in small pockets in Scotland and Devon, south-west England--and that may be good news for flood protection and the regeneration of wetlands. But farmers still worry that beaver dams will damage crops and pastures. New evidence suggests that beaver dams help prevent flooding, cleanse water and boost fish populations and wetland ecosystems.
