  • Resumen
    • Ananthaswamy features the pulsating landscape under Antarctica's frozen blanket. It took three weeks of crossing frozen terrain to reach the lake, and five days to punch a hole through its icy lid. When they finally broke through to the water below, the excitement was palpable. Hands grabbed the gooey mud pulled up through the hole. For this was no ordinary ice-fishing expedition Slawek Tulaczyk and his team had drilled through 800 meters of ice into Antarctica's Lake Whillans. The team's efforts--battling through 14-hour shifts in some of the harshest conditions on Earth--are part of a massive endeavor to uncover the continent's hidden secrets. Over a century ago, explorers trudged across its white blanket in pursuit of world records, aware only of the snow, ice and treacherous weather.
