  • The author reflects on the need for the U.S. to have an agency that encourages basic science research. He mentions a 1944 report concerning STEM education and the need for a separation of basic and applied scientific research. He suggests there is a similar lack of people with STEM education skills in 2014. He comments on the decline in basic research and suggests there needs to be an organization like the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) focusing on basic research.
