  • The article cites the Tappan Zee bridge in New York City as an example of decaying infrastructure in the U.S., and speaks approvingly of a new design planned to replace it. The Tappan Zee is a cantilever bridge that costs $50 million annually to maintain. In the spring of 2015 work will begin on a replacement bridge that will use cable-stayed technology. Civil engineer Andrew Herrmann says cable-stayed bridges are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.
