    • The article discusses geologists' study of rain to map the transformation of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains since the Oligocene period. Topics include the diffusion of rain into volcanic deposits caused by a series of volcanic eruptions, the study of hydrogen isotope ratios in rock samples by University of Idaho geologist Elizabeth Cassel and colleagues to determine peak elevations in Nevada, and the colliding of the North American and Pacific plates to form the San Andreas Fault.
