The author reflects on factors behind the decline in nuclear power following the April 26, 1986 explosion of the Chernobyl Unit 4 nuclear reactor in Ukraine. He states that even with the Chernobyl incident and the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan, nuclear power remains safer than coal power which causes premature deaths as a result of air pollution. He comments on reduced electric power consumption in developed countries, the expense of constructing new plants, and public opinion.
