The US could soon have its own climate refugees. Seven hundred or so people who live on Tangier Island--170 kilometers south-east of Washington DC--may see much of the island vanish under rising water. It could happen in just a few decades unless defences are built to hold back the thing tides. The team compared the islands current size to that on maps going back to 1850, when they covered 875 hectares. Now the islands have shrunk to just 320 hectares.
