Gene editing of human embryos might begin in the UK later this year. A team has proposed basic research using this technique that could help boost IVF success rates and reduce miscarriages. CRISPR is a relatively easy and effective technique for changing a cells DNA in precise and targeted ways. Kathy Niakan of the Francis Crick Institute in London and her team want to use CRISPR to unpick which genes control early development in humans. They plan to disable genes in single-cell embryos, just a day after fertilization. After about seven days, the team will destroy and analyze the embryos to see what effect this has had.
