An AI system called Autobahn can use Google Street View Images to optimize a car journey for a particular type of scenery. Nina Runge of the University of Bremen, Germany, and Johannes Schoning and colleagues at Belgium's Hasselt University first divided the landscape into squares with 1-kilometer sides and downloaded the Google Street View panorama from a spot on the largest road within each square. Next, a neural network classified Google Street View's scenery as forest mountain, fields, water, a sight (like a monument) or non-scenic. To test the system, the team carried out an online survey using images from journeys in three different settings, including the Spanish island of Majorca. The scenic Autobahn-qenerated route was compared with the fastest route and 24 volunteers were asked to say which route they would prefer to take. Most preferred the Autobahn route.
