The article examines the life and work of the Beijing, China-born contemporary artist Gu Dexin. Particular focus is given to his deliberate decision to withdraw from China's art scene in 2009. The exhibition "The Important Thing Is Not the Meat," which featured nearly 300 paintings, sculptures and video animations by Gu Dexin, held at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, China, is also noted.
