  • Resumen
    • This article discusses the economic conditions at art auctions held by Sotheby's, Christie's Inc., and Phillips de Pury & Co. in New York City during the fall of 2008. Although a recession and financial crisis dampened sales overall, the successful sale of paintings by Kazimir Malevich and Edgar Degas is noted. The prices commanded in the sale of works by contemporary artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Francis Bacon, and Damien Hirst are taken as an indication of declining values in that field.
