The author discusses an article on photography written by the historian and critic Beaumont Newhall and published in the Fall 1957 issue of "Art in America." Titled "Photography: Not art but...," the article inaugurated a regular column on photography as art published in the magazine. The author argues that in the article Newhall attempted to show that the art/not-art debate over photography was too narrowly constructed and thus needed to be reframed.
