In this article, the author reflects upon what happens when artists participate in boycotts. Particular focus is given to how this relates to boycotts that occurred in reaction to Israeli sponsorship of the 31st São Paulo Biennial art exhibition in 2014. Additional topics examined include the history of artist-led protests in the 21st century, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, and censorship that took place at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea.
