El uso del espacio refleja las relaciones que existen entre los individuos de un grupo. La afinidad entre el macho adulto y las hembras adultas es importante para que los grupos de gorilas sean estables. Se han estudiado las relaciones de afinidad en un grupo de 5 gorilas (1 macho adulto, 3 hembras adultas y 1 hembra joven) mediante medidas espaciales. Los resultados indican que existe una baja cohesión grupal, donde el macho no se distingue por tener las relacciones fuertes con las hembras adultas. La hembra joven es la más afin al macho y a las demás hembras. Las relaciones entre las hembras adultas son débiles. Posibles explicaciones a los resultados y algunas consideracones metodológicas son discutidas.

Social relationships between the members of a group are reflected in the use of space. The affinity between the adult male and adult female is important for the stability within gorilla groups.
Affinity relations were studied in a group of 5 gorillas (1 adult male, 3 adult females, and 1 young female) using spatial data. The results indicated low group cohesion, where the male did not have close relations with the adult females. The subject who related most with the male and the other females was the young female. The relationships between adult females were weak. Possible explanations and some methodologic considerations are discussed.
