    Integrar democracia representativa e instrumentos de participación directa es uno de los retos del siglo XXI. Desde la Unión Europea, y en el marco del Tratado de Lisboa, se ha impulsado la figura de la iniciativa ciudadana europea como un intento de solventar la desafección de la ciudadanía hacia las instituciones europeas, revalorizando la democracia directa como bastión al que aferrarse y como contrapunto a la democracia representativa. En esta contribución se analizarán los principales factores que contribuyen a la crisis de la representación en el contexto europeo y las propuestas que se han canalizado desde las instituciones europeas a fin de potenciar la conexión entre ciudadanos y poderes políticos

    Integrating representative democracy and instruments of direct participation is one of the challenges of the 21st century. From the European Union, and within the framework of the Treaty of Lisbon, the figure of the European citizens' initiative has been promoted as an attempt to resolve the disaffection of the citizens towards the European institutions, revaluing direct democracy as a bastion to cling to and as counterpoint to representative democracy. This contribution will analyze the main factors that contribute to the crisis of representation in the European context and the proposals that have been channeled from the European institutions in order to enhance the connection between citizens and political powers.
