    Il poemetto Paulo Ucello del Pascoli sembra delineare il quadro artistico e morale del pittore del'400; in realtà non è poesia storica o celebrativa, bensi exemplum di sublimazione poetica e di rimozione del profondo sotto il segno dell'amore fraterno e di una semplicità edificante di ascendenza francescana. Pascoli finisce per proiettare le proprie moderne inquietudini nelle ambagi oniriche del pittore fiorentino, in cui prova a riconciliare le sue due narure: lo spirito turbato e la rigorosa passione per la perizia formale.

    Pascoli's long poem Paolo Ucello appears to sketch out an artistic and moral portrait of the fifteenth-century painter. In reality, however, the poem is not so much a historical or celebratory text as an example of poetic sublimation and of the repression of the innermost self under the trappings of fraternal love and an edifying simplicity belonging to the Franciscan tradition. Pascoli ends up projecting his own modern anxieties onto the dream world of the Florentine painter in whom he attempts to reconcile a twin nature: a troubled spirit and a rigorous passion for formal perfection.
